Study the law-Ghai

Prof. Yash Pal Ghai has called on Kenyans to fully participate in the debate on the draft constitution to avoid being misled by politicians.

Ghai who was speaking during a public forum on constitutional review urged the public to read the draft constitution which is due to be published next week to have a better understanding of the content.

He said the 2005 referendum on the draft constitution was hijacked by the politicians who misinterpreted various chapters to suit their interests.

He said debate on the Kadhi courts was political since it never emerged as a contentious issue during the Bomas conference.

He warned that some politicians intended to make Kadhi courts controversial to frustrate the constitution review process.

The former CKRC chairman said he expects the new constitution to capture key principles that promote democracy, Human rights and equal representation.on Tuesday next week.

The Committee of Experts (CoE) confirmed on Thursday that the draft would be made public at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre on November 17 at 10am.

Kenyans will be given 30 days to scrutinise the draft and suggest amendments.

The draft would be published in newspapers, and copies distributed through civil society interest groups and at provincial administration offices.
