Imanyara bill latest

Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara Thursday downplayed claims that MPs snubbed debate on local tribunal bill.

Parliament on Wednesday failed to the Bill seeking to establish a local tribunal due to lack of quorum.

A paltry 19 Mps were present when the debate started.

Speaking to KBC, Imanyara expressed optimism that he would be able to marshal enough numbers when the bill gets to the voting stage.

Imanyara urged the two Principals President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to lead by example and support the bill.

The bill has sent shivers in the cabinet as it proposes that top government officials resign from their positions once mentioned as suspects, removal of the President's immunity to prosecution and reduction of the powers of the Attorney General and the Chief Justice among others.

The fate of the bill will be determined next Wednesday when it comes up again for debate.

Parliament rejected a bill seeking to establish a local tribunal early this year despite the two principals lobbying their troops.

The legislators rejected the bill sponsored by government saying it was designed to protect perpetrators of post poll chaos.
